We were rewarded with seeing thousands of Sandhill Cranes. During November - January the Refuge has the largest flock of Sandhill cranes in the southeastern US outside of Florida...as many as 12,000 cranes. The birds are tall gray-bodied crimson-capped birds. They are monogamous.
The Hiwassee and Tennessee Rivers come together at this site and create the perfect combination of feeding and shallow water roosting habitat.
There were thousands of cranes in this field.
So graceful in flight!
